Overweight control

The overweight control mechanism is made up of a two-fold strategy. They are reduction and maintenance.

Role of Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is the most important internal organ that determines the formation and distribution of fat within our bodies and also the weights.

Regularly Practise Halasana and Sarvangasana

The yogic exercises stimulating the thyroid gland are Halasana and Sarvangasana. Regular practice of these two asanas will maintain the correct weight of our bodies. They also control the effective distribution and burning of the fat content in our bodies. You can slowly increase the asana maintenance period up to five minutes each.

Other Useful Asanas

Surya Namaskars are quite helpful in controlling weight.

Here are the other 17 useful asanas. They break up and distribute fat deposits within our bodies. They also trim up our bodies by stretching and strengthening the flabby portions. Moreover, these asanas prevent the accumulation of fat in the vulnerable fat buffer areas. Thus, regular practice of these asanas reduces fat and keeps the weight in the normal level.

The asanas are Uddiyana, Utkatasana, Sasankasana, Yoga Mudra, Supta Vajrasana, Akarshana Dhanurasana, Janusirasana, Padahastasana, Naukasana, Chakrasana (supine), Dhanurasana, Shalabhasana, Bhujangasana, Sirshasana, and Ushtrasana.

Each of these asanas acts on the glands. They are also ideal for inducing deep breathing and consequently strengthen the weak areas of our bodies. Above all, blood circulation increases significantly.

The combined effect of these factors reduces excess fat deposits, brings down weight if it is beyond the normal stage and keeps the weight at the optimal point.

What About the Breathing Exercises?

The yogic breathing exercises should be practised twice daily along with Bhastrika Pranayama. You’d become slim. There are no side effects at all.

Overweight ans Constipation

Since overweight people tend to suffer from constipation, regularly practise the asanas to get rid of chronic constipation. The sluggish bowels will be toned up. Avoid fatty food substances. Never take laxatives.

Go On Fasting and Cure Overweight

Once in a fortnight go on fasting. It will significantly reduce weight. But, frequent fasting just to lose weight will be counter-productive.

Is Skipping Helpful?

Skipping is helpful in reducing fat and maintaining the proper weight. However, if you have never practised skipping or is trying to do after becoming overweight, don’t do it with the skipping rope. Do skipping sans the rope.

What About Walking or Swimming

Do walk long distances. You can also try swimming but under expert eyes.

The Dietary Points

  • Avoid fried food.
  • Don’t include starch in your meals. Excess carbohydrate gets converted to fat. This will lead to overweight.
  • Instead of animal fats, go for vegetable oils.
  • Replace fruits for sweets, buttermilk for curd and honey for sugar.
  • Your diet must have a judicious mixture of minerals and vitamins.
  • The diet must not contain too much of fats, salt and sugar.
  • Eat moderately.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Don’t nibble between meals.
  • Stay away from biscuits, sweets and nuts.
  • Remember that the food intake should be commensurate with the energy you spend.

Let me start by saying that my wife is a Yoga Instructor and that I am 6’8″ and #450+

I’ve learned that there are a few very different varieties of yoga and instructors. There is the Yoga to sweat your butt off, there is Yoga for strength and flexibility (this is me) and there is also therapeutic Yoga – a style that not only works on strength and flexibility but also focuses on the body as a whole and allows the practitioner the freedom to do what works for them as opposed to a strict regime of “do this pose this way”!

Since I started doing yoga on a consistent basis, I am more flexible than I have been in many years and I’m also getting stronger. I too visit the gym for swimming and additional exercise and do know the stigma associated with being not only big…. but HUGE!

I’ve been thru the personal trainers that have no clue and want to show me how I can loose 200lbs in the next year…. and after the first workout I can’t move for a week. There are many yoga instructors that will take the time and work with you no matter your size, you just need to find them as they normally do not live in the busy studios where turning over classes is the most important thing.

I’ve asked my wife to start a class where she teaches calling it Yoga for Fat People, but she’s afraid that she will offend people. Those of us that are over weight know we are fat and for those of us that want to loose weight and be thinner we don’t need to be coddled, just treated like the people we are and not be constantly pushed past our abilities but guided down a path.

There are yoga instructors out there that will help bigger folks on that path, my current favorite is Candy Evans in Richmond VA – she runs a gentle class at my local gym and makes it easy to feel comfortable in the class no matter your age, weight or abilities.
